Entry 10

Reflection: I had an amazing internship experience and was able to have fun while learning. I was able to pursue an interest of mine while incorporating the technology side of the business. During this experience I have gotten to see what it is like to interact with customers and market your own business. I now realize that starting your own business may be difficult but there are definite advantages to that endeavor. Throughout this experience I have been able to attend a variety of different weddings (even a destination wedding in Boone), go to bridal portrait sessions, children’s portrait sessions, senior portrait sessions, and be involved in studio work such as picture editing. This has allowed me to see all sides of the business.
This internship wasn’t exactly what I expected, but in a good way. I anticipated doing more computer-related tasks such as managing the Tammy Wingo Photography Facebook page and her business website. That was a pleasant surprise to me because I enjoy hands-on learning and would much rather be outside taking pictures than sitting behind a desk working at a computer. I would recommend this as an internship for anyone who has a strong desire to learn more about photography and what it is like to photograph weddings, children, etc. I’m very thankful for this experience and thankful for all the help, training, and advice Tammy has provided me throughout the internship.

Entry 9

Dates: 10/8/11, 10/15/11, 11/14/11
Activities: Wedding and senior portrait editing
Technical Information: DSLR cameras, tripods, light detectors, remote flashes, Adobe Photoshop
Reflection: Tammy was very generous in providing Lindsay (her other intern) and I with senior portrait sessions. Lindsay did her first session at Duke Gardens and I did mine in Boone while Tammy and I were staying there for a wedding. However, Lindsay and I did our second session together in downtown Raleigh. It was so much fun for all of us to get to go out and take images together without the stress and time restrictions of a wedding. Lindsay and I also took turns taking pictures of each other while one of us was modeling. Lindsay and I also got the opportunity to edit our own senior pictures. This is one of the things about my internship that makes me proud. Not many people get to say that they edited their own senior pictures the way they like them. Another thing about my internship that makes me proud is knowing that there are couples that have purchased and love the coffee table books I created. It’s a great feeling to know that something you have designed will be looked through and cherished for rest of their lives as they reminisce the day of their marriage.

Entry 8

Date: 9/10/11
Activities: Wedding
Technical Information: DSLR cameras, tripods, light detectors, remote flashes
Reflection: My duties have not changed much at all since I first started working. I believe that shows that I was given plenty of responsibility and trust from the beginning. From day 1 Tammy has trusted me with carrying and monitoring equipment worth thousands of dollars each as well as interacting with clients and helping them when needed. She didn’t allow me to take pictures at the first wedding so I could get a feel for how working at a wedding plays out. However, I was allowed to take images at every wedding since then and provide those images to the clients. This is a lot of responsibility since I have to be keeping track of the equipment while also trying to take pictures with my own camera, and making sure the images I take are good enough to give to the couple.

Entry 7

Dates: 7/24/11, 8/8/11, 8/11/11
Activities: Studio and baby portrait session
Technical Information: Adobe Photoshop
Reflection: July 24th was my first baby portrait session. The little girl’s name was Bellamy and she was about 6 months old. Although she was adorable, I got to experience firsthand the difficulties of working with small children. Babies tend to tire out easily, so Tammy and I had to work quickly to capture enough quality images of Bellamy before she got cranky. While Tammy was crouched everywhere on the floor and moving around constantly, I was always a step behind her holding a variety of toys and trying my best to make the baby smile. It proved to be very frustrating to try to make the baby smile and look at the camera. In addition to the difficulties with making Bellamy smile, another frustration I had was when a bride gave Tammy feedback about the coffee table book I made. She asked that we switch out about half of the images in the book to others that appealed to her more. That meant I basically had to redesign an entire book which takes days to create. Eventually I switched out the images she didn’t want and she told Tammy she was very happy with what I had made. Although it was initially frustrating that I had to re-do my hard work, it was rewarding in the end to know she was happy with my creation.

Entry 6

Dates: 7/21/11, 7/22/11, 7/23/11
Activities: Studio and wedding
Technical Information: Adobe Photoshop, DSLR cameras, tripods, light detectors, remote flashes
Reflection: At this point I’ve gotten more experience with using Adobe Photoshop and have improved my skills, speed, and efficiency. I have also learned a lot about photography as far as how to use my camera settings and the key elements of photography such as proper light. This career may have seemed simple at first but now I realize that adjusting all of those camera settings manually while dealing with clients and overlapping projects is more difficult than it appeared. Photography will generally require extensive training and classes as well as lessons on Adobe Photoshop and other photo editing software. It also may require business and marketing classes if intending to start your own business like Tammy. Photography is a great way to have fun while capturing life in an artistic way, and is a favorite hobby of mine. However I don’t believe I will be pursuing it as a career path.

Entry 5

Dates: 6/21/11 and 7/16/11
Activities: Studio and wedding
Technical Information: Adobe Photoshop, DSLR cameras, tripods, light detectors, remote flashes
Reflection: My main contribution to Tammy Wingo Photography is to help make weddings easier for Tammy by carrying the multiple bags and equipment that she wouldn’t be able to carry by herself. Also, I complete coffee table books and photo editing which helps make her work load easier. In addition to that, I take images of wedding locations and other small wedding details while Tammy is busy with taking pictures of the family. Many brides appreciate us capturing the little details that were well thought out in the planning of their wedding. Tammy provides the couple with the images I have taken at their wedding in addition to hers. This makes me feel like I make a contribution to the satisfaction of Tammy’s customers.

Entry 4

Dates: 6/14/11, 6/16/11, 6/17/11
Activities: Studio
Technical Information: iMac software, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Bridge
Reflection: This was my first experience with working in the studio at Tammy’s house. She has 3 different computers that she uses for storing and editing images. The computer I worked with was the iMac. I learned about the different software she uses in order to create albums for customers as well as storing and editing the images. Adobe Bridge is used to store images, and Adobe Photoshop is used to edit images and create photo books (“coffee table books”) for customers. I was well prepared in how to navigate the computer from AOIT; however I wish I could have had more knowledge about Adobe Photoshop prior to my internship. Training in how to use Adobe Photoshop was time consuming and difficult in some instances because most of the advanced functions are not user-friendly.
